The pressure from the United States on Israel to reduce the number of civilian Palestinians killed in the Gaza Strip during its military offensive continues. On Friday, Washington confirmed that it is negotiating with Israel for a “reduction in intensity” of the campaign, shifting from massive bombings of entire Palestinian neighborhoods to more focused operations with specific objectives. However, the US has acknowledged that it has not obtained a commitment from Israel to set a date for the end of the war, which could last for months.
Meanwhile, the military campaign continues to be harsh and bloody. Israeli forces have intensified their bombings in the southern part of the Strip. One of these bombings resulted in the death of a cameraman from the Qatari television network Al Jazeera. The network has denounced that the demands of Israeli forces prevented his life from being saved by not allowing rescue services to arrive on time.
Israel, on the other hand, has acknowledged accidentally killing three of its own hostages. The relatives of those still held by Hamas have called for a rally in Tel Aviv on Saturday. Additionally, the Israeli government has stated that, after weeks of negotiations, it will finally allow the opening of the Kerem Shalom border crossing between Israel and Gaza. This could increase the number of trucks carrying humanitarian aid entering the Strip each day. The US has applauded the decision, while NGOs and the UN have taken it with caution, awaiting the materialization of the promised aid.
