Spain is facing a problem that brings back recent memories: the exodus of workers from the country. In 2013, when the Great Recession that began in 2008 was coming to an end, around 532,000 people crossed the borders. A decade later – and with the COVID-19 pandemic in between – the number is similar again: 531,889 people emigrated from Spain in 2022, which according to a study by the BBVA Foundation resulted in a loss of 154.8 billion euros in terms of human capital for the economy.
